LG to Focus on Handsets that Run Windows Phone and Android

Mobile phone company LG in the past have focussed on their own operating system running S-Class. Although it worked quite well, it always had a few niggles inside that made it frustrating to use with some screen transitions not being as smooth as the iPhone for example. Their hardware for a long time has always been top notch though. Following their own OS they then switched to making Windows Mobile devices with the S-Class interface on top.

LG made an announcement that they are not in the market of developing their own proprietary OS. Instead, they will focus more on the handsets that will run either Google [GOOG] Android or Windows Phone 7 Series. This is good news as both the OS’s mentioned are being heavily developed by dedicated teams and in the terms of Android (the only one of the two currently available), it is making serious steps forwards in to becoming in the “top 3” mobile phone operating systems. Windows Phone 7 Series Development Docs Leaked

XDA developers is a good place to visit to find gems of information along with ROMS and what not. In this case, a user on the forums managed to get hold of the development documents that show what is required when developing applications for the new Microsoft mobile operating system.

What the document also confirms is that the phone will be capable of multi-tasking, or I should say re-confirms as this was already known.

Developers seem to be quite restricted in the OS and will need to use managed code that will be closely audited. Tools to develop on the system will be Visual Studio along with Expression Blend. [Read more…]

Windows Phone 7 Series Dial-Pad Spotted

Microsoft [MSFT] didn’t get to show off all of Windows Phone 7 Series for obvious reasons in that there’s only so much time allotted to present things and it could get a bit tedious showing every single variation of screen that might be used on a 7 Series smartphone. Also the operating system is in very early stages of development which could be the reason this dial pad looks so simple.

The dial-pad pictured shows the usual 12 buttons along with alpha characters above each number and a space above that to show what number is being dialled. It does look simple and might not be the final product although with Windows Phone 7’s being based around simple it might actually be the real deal. [Read more…]

Windows Phone Classic

When Microsoft [MSFT] announced the new Windows Phone 7 Series on Monday we learned that the company had completely re-written the OS from the ground up rather than using older code. 7 Series will be launched later this year, while phones currently run Windows Mobile 6.5.X.

What we hear now is that the previous version (version 6.5) will now be known as Windows Phone Classic. The Windows Phone Classic will continue to be supported and Microsoft will continue to ship that version of the OS along side Windows Phone 7 Series. Obviously there will be two types of phones which will be the premium sort that have the necessary minimum spec to run WM7S and those cheaper phones that do not.

The name change isn’t happening yet from what we have heard and the older OS will receive it’s new name when Windows Phone 7 Series is launched. [Read more…]

Will Windows Phone 7 Series Fix this Problem?

The graph above represents three mobile phone OS’s in competition with each other. Back in December 2006, Microsoft [MSFT] appeared to be the king of U.S. smartphone market share with just short of 35% of the market which rose slightly after that but then started to fall down on a steel slope till in December 2009 it hit a low of 17% share with RIM taking the top spot and Apple [AAPL] being somewhere in between.

Windows Phone 7 Series was announced this Monday just gone and Microsoft are hoping that this graph can be fixed. [Read more…]

Windows Phone 7 Series Marketplace

Lots of information was shared about Windows Phone 7 Series yesterday, in particular the new interface that uses a new active tile system to display information on finger-friendly sized tiles that are set at 1 – 2 on each row.

What we didn’t see yesterday was anything about the Marketplace for Windows Phone 7 Series. What we do believe is that older applications not designed for the latest Windows Phone will not work, thus meaning new applications will need to be created. The screen shots above and below show the new marketplace and how it will look.

The interface for Marketplace follows along with the same theme that the rest of the new operating system uses in that the UI is wider than the actual screen which can be scrolled to the side to get to the information you want. [Read more…]

Windows Phone 7 Series Now Official

Windows Phone 7 Series has been officially announced at MWC today. The new operating system was designed to “re-invent” how phones actually operate and how the UI functions. In the past a lot of phones tend to try function like a PC. Microsoft’s [MSFT] new approach is that the phone is more intimate than a PC, and should have a new user interface.

What Microsoft wanted to achieve when planning Windows Phone 7 Series is a device that can focus on an individual and their needs as well as helping to organise information and applications.

The new operating system features flatter icons than before that actually look good. They are large allowing for 1 or 2 to fit across the page and work easily without the need of a stylus. The home page scrolls down and displays several of these blocks which house the most common details and contacts you need. [Read more…]

Windows Phone 7 Series Leaked Pics

Although the latest OS from Microsoft [MSFT] has yet to be unveiled (will be official later today), some sneaky people have managed to capture images of the new OS when some changes were being made to a display. The display changers didn’t seem to think to check around them when they lifted the covers and someone managed to capture some photos of the OS underneath.

What is seen is some XBox Live integration on the home page along with larger icons for items such as messages, missed calls etc… Also a new “Me” section seems to be on the screen too.

From what we see on the images it looks fantastic, although hopefully it’s not just a new skin for the current WM 6.5. We are expecting a lot more from Microsoft this time around as they seem to be caught behind on reskinning old mobile operating systems making it difficult for users to drop the unwanted stylus. Windows Phone 7 Series – Name for WM7

MWC is about to start in Barcelona and as expected, a number of companies have already set up displays with one of them being Microsoft. Engadget managed to capture a picture of one of the banners that Microsoft [MSFT] have set up which just says Windows Phone with something underneath that is covered with a sticker, which we assume covers the “official name” of WM7.

Thanks to the photoshop skills of someone at Engadget, the image was adjusted to actually reveal what’s behind the sticker and shows what appears to be the official full name of WM7 which is Windows Phone 7 Series.

Although the number 7 is no big surprise at all, it does make you wonder what’s going on with the Series part of the name. Perhaps breakouts in to pro, media, home versions of the software will be seen. [Read more…]

Palm drops Windows Phone

palm-drops-windows-mobilePalm have confirmed that Windows Phone (Windows Mobile) will not be used on any of their phones from now on. Instead, it will be working with it’s own webOS only. This was confirmed by the Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein who said there will be no more devices with that OS installed from them.

All development in the future will now focus on creating a better webOS. It also indicates that no other OS will get a look in either as Jon said… “Which means that going forward, our roadmap will include only Palm webOS-based devices.” [Read more…]

HTC Touch2 Launching October 6 with Windows Phone (6.5)

htc-touch2HTC have announced that they will be launching the HTC Touch2 on October 6th which coincidently, is the same day that Windows Mobile 6.5 (or Windows Phone as it is now called) is going to be launched.

This means that the phone will run the new Windows Phone OS along with HTC’s TouchFLO overlay. If you are wanting a new mobile phone running the latest Windows OS then this is well worth waiting for. The new operating system is a huge leap for Microsoft and actually could be quite good if the hardware runs it well. Specs are unknown for the hardware at the moment, but expect that software wise it will make full use of all the features such as Exchange support. [Read more…]

Windows Phone OS – WM 6.5 Final Build Previews

Windows-PhoneThe Windows Phone (the new name for Windows Mobile 6.5) final build has been revealed by Microsoft. The preview shows Windows Phone installed on an HTC Touch Diamond2.

The new name comes as the phone will be heavily integrated with Windows 7 on a 3 screen strategy that they have working within the cloud. When a user leaves their PC at the desk to go out and about the cloud setup will allow the user to access everything they need while on the move in effect, taking the PC in a phone with them.
