Samsung ATIV S Windows 8 smartphone revealed

Samsung has revealed the first Windows 8 powered smartphone at IFA. The new smartphone is called the Samsung ATIV S. Specs have also been revealed which show the device is just 8.7mm thin. It has a brushed aluminium chassis along with a 4.8 inch HD Super AMOLED display. The glass on the front is provided by Corning and is the new Gorilla Glass 2 which is thinner but stronger than the previous generation of glass.

Windows 8 Hints at Phone Integration

Last week, Microsoft announced Windows 8. Shortly after the announcement a preview version of Windows 8 was available for public download. An eagle eyed writer at istartedsomething has managed to spot a couple of interesting tiles on the Metro style interface. One of them is pictured below which is titled Missed calls and the other makes mention of “Call mobile”.

Windows Live Messenger for iPhone Coming Soon

Windows Live Messenger for iPhone is on it’s way. The application will be launching in June along with the rest of Windows Live Wave 4.

When launched the Windows Live Messenger service will allow photos to be shared with users as well as provide social networking abilities.

The screen layout looks fairly standard and easy to navigate around with the main screen being home to a search bar, friends online as well as 4 buttons on the lower end of the screen to switch between various functions such as social, friends, chats and photo. [Read more…]

Garmin and ASUS have announced the nuvifone M10 smartphone today that runs the Windows Mobile platform which Garmin-Asus say it ideal for business use. The phone, as the name suggests, is another satnav/smartphone convergence that allows users to carry an all in one device that has Garmin’s expertise in navigation built in while offering full support in Windows Mobile for Exchange services allowing business users to keep in touch.

Acer E110 Android and P300 Windows Mobile Phones Unveiled

Acer have revealed details of a couple of new phones called the Acer E110 that runs the Google Android OS and the Acer P300 that will run Windows mobile.

The Acer E110 has appeared over at Bluetooth SIG and is expected to run Android 2.0 when launched. For connectivity the E110 will use UMTS/HSDPA at 900/1200MHz or 850/1900MHz. Assisted GPS is built in along with Bluetooth and although not mentioned here, we assume WiFi at atleast 802.11b/g. The screen size and resolution is unknown although we do know it is touchscreen. Four buttons are to be found under the screen which are home to the traditional Send/End/Back and Home keys. [Read more…]

Over 30 New Smartphones to run Windows 6.5 by Christmas

windows-mobile-65A Microsoft Executive has commented saying that more that 30 new Windows Mobile 6.5 devices will be launched before the end of this year. These will be made up from over 15 handset vendors which include HTC, Acer, Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson, Toshiba, HP as well as others.

As well as handset makers getting involved, a number of carriers have also shown interest which includes…”AT&T, Sprint Nextel, Verizon Wireless, Orange, T-Mobile, Vodafone, NTT DoCoMO, Softbank Mobile, SKT, Telstra and Telus, have also voiced support for Windows Mobile 6.5, the sources added.” [Read more…]

NFC for iPhone 5 is now considered unlikely

A few days ago an picture of a front panel on an iPhone 5 went around the web. This particular image had a picture of a square device at the top right (when looking at the panel from the back). Matching it up to an earlier patent that Apple filed as well as some speculation based on Passbook being added to iOS 6, many people, including me, mentioned that NFC could be coming to the iPhone 5.

Well, AnandTech has commented that NFC is unlikely. The reason for this is how the iPhone 5 has been built. If all the leaked parts are official then the back of the iPhone will have a metal and glass back. The glass portions at the back are classed as RF windows which can let radio waves through. But, as they are quite small it is unlikely that NFC built in to this configuration will work correctly.

Nokia Video Hints at a New Phone with Better Camera Launching

It appears that Nokia is about to step up a little again and introduce a new camera on a smartphone. The flagship camera phone at the moment is the 12 megapixel Nokia N8 although this is getting quite old now. A video posted shows several images each with a tag like of “Get Ready to Capture a Pure View”.
