86.4 Million iPhones to Ship in 2011

By the end of this year, Apple will likely have sold 86.4 million iPhones. This will put them up 82 percent when compared to last years numbers of 47.5 million. Last year Nokia shipped over 100 million smartphones although they will likely drop to 74.4 million for 2011.

Microsoft Windows 8 Unveiled

Yesterday at D9, Microsoft unveiled Windows 8. Windows 8 is designed for a range of devices from those that have just a touchscreen and are small (think smartphone/tablet) all the way up to large screen devices with or without a keyboard and mouse.

Microsoft has departed from the usual Windows look and feel in some ways by using a more interactive user interface.

Microsoft “Where’s my phone update?” Info for WP7 Launched

Yesterday, Microsoft started rolling out the latest Windows Phone 7 update… the one that brings copy/paste to the relatively new smartphone platform. The problem is, is that not all people are receiving the update just yet. Yesterday we heard that those unlocked devices, ie, not sold from a carrier, are getting the updates right now. But, those buying through a carrier such as Orange in the UK were told they had to wait longer.

The “Where’s my phone update?” website has been launched so that users can know within 10 days or so, when the next WP7 update will be launching on their new smartphone…

We periodically release software updates that add new features to your phone or improve its performance. When an update is available, a message appears on your phone letting you know. But we understand that it’s hard to wait, and that many of you want a better sense of when to expect your update.

Android Ice Cream Smartphones Leaked in Dell Roadmap

O2 Cloud Based Backup for Smartphones Announced

O2/Telefonica has announced a new service that will allow smartphones to easily backup data to the cloud. The service is currently codenamed Frigo and is set to launch this coming Spring.

Frigo is compatible with several operating systems which includes Google Android, Symbian and Windows Phone 7.

“The real value offered by Frigo with regards to multi-platform is ‘all my stuff, anywhere, anytime’. The outcome for users will be true ownership of their apps and content through a personalised and consistent service that can be accessed and enjoyed on the device of their choice.”

ViewSonic Announce V350 Smartphone and ViewPad Tablet

ViewSonic has introduced a couple of new devices just ahead of MWC that kicks off in a few days time.

First on the list is the ViewPad 10Pro that is described as being a professional tablet. It has a 10 inch screen and is capable of dual booting between Windows 7 Professional and Android 2.2. The idea behind this is that the user uses Android for email and basic web browsing, but switches to Windows when a little more kick is needed. HTC HD2 Dual Boot to Windows 7 and Android

The HTC HD2 is now capable of dual booting in to either Windows Phone 7 or Android thanks to the guys at XDA Developers.

To do this, you need to have a couple of SD cards ie, an 8GB and 16GB card. You need two cards so that you can create the needed partitions and once done, you copy the smaller card partition to the larger card. [Read more…]

Skype for iPhone Gets Video Calls

Skype for the iPhone has received an update bringing it up to version 3.0. This is the very same version we reported on a couple of days ago that had leaked on one of the Skype websites.

What Skype 3.0 brings to the iPhone is video calling, but video calling isn’t restricted to just WiFi, good news here is that Skype allow video calls over WiFi and 3G.

Two-Way video calls can be established between various devices including the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 4th gen although on the 3GS the rear camera will need to be used which doesn’t help things. [Read more…]
