iOS 4 Jailbreak Arrives for iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G

The iPhone DevTeam yesterday launched a new unlock for iOS 3.1.3 that allows any iPhone running the now older OS to unlock the phone.

As well as releasing an unlock for the older 3.1.3 iOS, the team also launched the iOS 4 Jailbreak. The Jailbreak is only compatible on iPod Touch second gen and the iPhone 3G (not the 3GS just yet). We are expecting that the 3GS will be jailbroke soon though.

As with all iOS jailbreaks in the past, Redsn0w makes it simple in that you tether your phone, load up a program and the jailbreak is applied. [Read more…]

Microsoft Windows Embedded Compact 7 Trial Download Available

Microsoft [MSFT] unveiled Windows Embedded Compact 7 earlier today. The new operating system is being designed to function on devices that sit between smartphones and desktop PC’s, ie Tablet computers and low powered netbooks/laptops.

It seems Microsoft has created Windows Embedded Compact 7 because Windows Phone 7 Series isn’t quite enough for a larger screened tablet, and that Windows 7 it’s self is just a bit too much for a tablet to need both in features and performance wise.

Microsoft has created a website explaining exactly what the new OS is and how it can be integrated in to the devices we use. The company is also offering a free trial download so you can see what it’s about yourself before they launch it in the near future. [Read more…]

Apple iPhone running Android – Installation Just got Easier

Over the past month or so we have been keeping an eye on the progress of a guy who has managed to get Google Android running on the Apple iPhone. When the Android update was made available, the steps could have been a little challenging for some people. This is no longer a worry now though as a developer has managed to get automatic installation of Google [GOOG] Android OS on the Apple [AAPL] iPhone 2G and 3G models.

The auto installer is called iPhodroid and automates the Android OS installation on the iPhone. Just before we go on to a few more details you need to take note that Android on the iPhone isn’t really usable. It does a number of things like browse the web, make calls, send/receive text messages and what not, but the developer who created the build hasn’t looked at any power-management functions yet which means your iPhone battery will be dead within the hour. Ciphone C9 iPhone Clone can Dual-Boot OS and WM6.5

The Ciphone C9 is a clone of an Apple iPhone. The C9 can dual boot in to OS or Windows Mobile 6.5 and comes with quite a few decent features such as a GPS unit, 2 Megapixel camera, a choice of 4GB or 8GB of storage, GPS, G-Sensor, dual compass, WiFi and EDGE as well as a 3.5 inch touchscreen.

A full run down of the specifications can be found below which show that it’s actually a decent and capable phone. However, we are unsure of the build quality and if it meets that of the iPhone. Also with it running OS or WM6.5, we are not sure how good they are on the device and if it runs quick enough to make the user experience good enough. Chances are it will be a little buggier than the iPhone. [Read more…]

Google Maps Navigation Coming to iPhone?

We are hearing today that Google Maps Navigation, the free satnav service, could be coming to the Apple iPhone. This hasn’t been confirmed or set in stone yet, but the indications come from comments made by Google [GOOG] saying they are looking at bringing the free navigation software to other platforms.

Apple [AAPL] already uses Google Maps on the iPhone for mapping services, so the possibility of that being converted to a free navigation application is too far out of question.

With Google also bringing Google Maps Navigation to the UK just this week, this also indicates that Google do have plans to expand the service beyond the US and beyond the Android platform. [Read more…]

Microsoft could launch “Pink” Smartphone Series on April 12

Both Apple [AAPL] and Microsoft [MSFT] announced press events yesterday. The Apple event is to showcase their new iPhone OS 4 that looks to be launching later this year. The Microsoft event is a little more hush in that we are not sure as of yet what they will be launching.

The invites from Microsoft had a message on them saying “It’s time to share” which was included along side an invitation to a mystery event.

Rumours have indicated that the Microsoft Courier might be introduced at this event although it is believed that MS will be unveiling the new MS smartphone platform called “Pink” – well, that’s the code name at least. [Read more…]

HTC Diamond2 Win Mo Phone running Android 2.1

Just a few weeks back we reported that someone had managed to get Google [GOOG] Android running on a HTC Touch Pro2 smartphone. The Touch Pro2 incidentally is a Windows Mobile phone which hasn’t been designed to run the Android OS.

Following on in that vein, someone has also managed to get Android 2.1 running on a HTC Diamond2 smartphone. The previous phone (touch pro2) was running a Nexus One ROM. This time the HTC Touch Diamond2 is running the ROM from the HTC Legend which also brings the HTC Sense user interface to the phone. [Read more…]

Android Catching up to iPhone on Mobile Web Browsing

Back in August 2009 the Apple [AAPL] iPhone web browser was streets ahead in terms of how many people used it to browse the internet. Just after that Google [GOOG] made a big push on Android by launching a number of high end phones and gradually Android has almost caught up in terms of how many people surf the web using it.

In August 2009 the iPhone OS was responsible for about 50% of all mobile traffic and just a few months before that around May 2009 it peaked at 70% market share. Windows Mobile and RIM have been on the decline all of last year and webOS that joined us in June last year started off relatively well, but is also declining too.

It’s certainly interesting to see how Google have made an impact on those figures especially with how well the iPhone has done since it’s first launch in 2007. [Read more…]
