With the announcement of the Nintendo 3DS device (a 3D handheld gaming device), the question has been asked about a Sony PSP 3D handheld device and if that was a possibility, or being worked on. In short the answer is no, it is not being worked on right now.
‘Our focus on 3D right now is on the console. There’s a tremendous amount of opportunity on PlayStation 3 with 3D. The amount of interest in 3D from the retail side and game publishers is off the charts. We know we have a hit with 3D on PS3 and we’re going to concentrate our efforts there.
The answer is above where Sony have said they are working on the 3D capabilities of the Sony PlayStation 3. The interview was conducted by IGN who interviewed John Koller from SCEA who is the director of hardware and marketing.
As well as saying there is nothing being worked on at the moment he went on to say that there isn’t really a market for 3D gaming as 8 to 9 year olds just wouldn’t embrace the idea of 3D just yet. Also the glasses free device that Nintendo are making has also come under scrutiny with a number of people believing that it just isn’t quite at a level yet where it could function as good as it would need to. Experts believe that glasses free 3D technology is still a few years (as in 5 – 10 years) away to have any good application.
So there you have it… for now Sony are not concentrating on a Sony PSP 3D device, but instead taking the mad rush for 3D content and working it in to their PlayStation 3.
