Google [GOOG] has launched version 2.1 of the YouTube app for Android based smartphones. This new version takes YouTube out of the Android build allowing the app to be updated when needed rather than updated each time Android increases a version.
The new app also brings a number of new features such as in-page playback, posting comments, subscription updates as well as a full screen UI.
The aim of YouTube 2.1 for Android is to mirror the desktop version on smartphones.
The in-page playback feature allows users to view video content within the page, meaning you can switch between full screen playback and within a webpage format where you can watch while browsing comments and other related videos.
The new comments section can be used while the video is playing and also lets you comment while the video is playing.
As for compatibility, it’s Android 2.2 and 2.3 at the moment. For those running Android 2.2 you can download it from the market. For Nexus S (launching soon) and Nexus One owners, it should be pre-installed assuming you have updated to 2.3.
